(BIVN) – A portion of Aliʻi Drive in Kona was closed on Thursday evening due to a brush fire.
The brush fire was located near the 2 mile marker between Lunapule Road and Royal Poinciana Drive, the Hawaiʻi Police Department reported in a public alert, and required a detour of traffic for the next few hours.
Police and fire personnel were in the area, and officials asked motorists to drive with caution.
UPDATE – (10 a.m. on Friday) – From the Hawaiʻi Police Department:
About 6:09 p.m. on Thursday, Kona patrol officers responded to reported brush fire in a vacant agriculture property near the block of 75-6000 Aliʻi Drive. As a result of the blaze, police closed Aliʻi Drive in both directions between Lunapule Road and Royal Poinciana Drive for approximately two hours.
The fire, which covered an area 200 feet by 75 feet, was subsequently extinguished by Hawaiʻi Fire Department personnel. There were no evacuations and no injuries during this event.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
