UPDATE – 9:30 a.m. – Hawaii County Civil Defense says the Hilo Bayfront Highway and Onekahakaha Beach Park in Keaukaha are closed today due to the high surf.
(BIVN) – The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning for northeast shores of Hawaiʻi Island.
A large, long period north-northeast swell will build today, peak tonight, and gradually diminish on Sunday, forecasters say. Large breaking waves of 12 to 16 feet are expected along east-facing shores, and 15 to 20 feet along north-facing shores.
“There are no beach or road closures at this time; be aware that closures may occur at any time,” said the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense in a Saturday morning message. “Beach-goers, swimmers, and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution if you enter the water.”
