(BIVN) – Last Tuesday, the Hawaiʻi County Council Committee on Public Works and Mass Transit advanced Resolution 190-19, accepting two acres of land on the north side of the Kona Scenic Park from Hōkūliʻa developers 1250 Oceanside LLC for public use.
“We’re just really happy that this is moving forward,” said Mike Vitousek, cultural resource manager at Hōkūliʻa. “It has been a few years that we’ve been working with the County Parks and Rec staff to get this Kona Scenic Park expansion parcel dedicated. I think it’s going to be a huge asset for the community. I bring my girls there all the time. We parked in the area right here before it was closed off, and looking forward to being reopened and maintained by the county for parking. That way we won’t have overflow parking onto Halekiʻi and into the neighborhood there.”
“I just wanted to say that one of the community members who advocated for this is Aunty Cynthia Nazara, who recently passed away,” Vitousek continued. “It’s something that was really important to her and I’m just happy that we can keep that moving forward.”
“I agree, and wanted to mention Cynthia Nazara,” added Councilmember Rebecca Villegas. “So grateful for her leadership and her care for this place and I think that this is a phenomenal legacy of her love for this land and for the park there.”
“So I just ask for your support in the accepting of this property,” Villegas said.
