(BIVN) – The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Wind Warning for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, which is in effect from 6 p.m. Friday evening to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The warning replaces the High Wind Watch, which is no longer in effect. Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense issued an alert message Friday.
Forecasters say west winds will increase to 40 to 60 mph tonight, then strengthen to 50 to 75 mph Saturday. The strong winds will continue through Sunday afternoon, and possibly holding through Sunday night.
The National Weather Service says travel to the summits will be difficult or dangerous.
The access road to the summit of Mauna Kea is already closed to the public at the Visitor Information Station, according to Maunakea Rangers.
Also, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park says the summit of Mauna Loa is closed beyond Red Hill Cabin due to the high wind conditions.
