(BIVN) – Two fatal motorcycle collisions, unrelated yet with eerily similar circumstances, occurred in Kona over the weekend.
Both crashes resulted in the death of the motorcycle rider, and both collisions occurred as different Subaru station wagons were attempting to make left turns.
The first incident happened on Friday evening. Police say:
A 40-year-old Kailua-Kona man died following a two-vehicle collision Friday, (December 14), in Kailua-Kona at the intersection of Henry Street and Malulani Road, (Lowe’s).
The 40-year-old motorcycle rider has not been positively identified.
Responding to a 6:09 p.m. call, police determined that a light green 2003 Subaru station wagon being operated by a 57-year-old Kailua-Kona woman was attempting to make a left turn onto Malulani Road from the left turn lane on Henry Street, when she was broadsided by a black 2009 Yamaha motorcycle being operated by the 40-year-old male who was traveling eastbound, (mauka), on Henry Street. The Kailua-Kona man was transported to the Kona Community Hospital where he was later pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m.
The operator of the Subaru station wagon was not injured in the collision and was later released pending further investigation.
Police believe speed and alcohol are possible factors in the crash. The motorcycle rider was also not wearing a helmet.
The second deadly crash occurred a little over 12 hours later. Police say:
A 45-year-old Waikoloa man died following a two-vehicle collision Saturday, (December 15), in Holualoa, south of the 7-mile marker on Māmalahoa Highway.
The 45-year-old motorcyclist has been identified as John Paul Simonsen of Waikoloa.
Responding to a 8:31 a.m. call, police determined that a green 2014 Subaru station wagon being operated by a 77-year-old Holualoa woman was attempting to make a left turn, (north), onto Māmalahoa Highway from a private driveway, when a red 2001 Honda motorcycle being operated by the 45-year-old male who was traveling south, lost control and grazed the vehicle after laying the bike down on the roadway.
The Waikoloa man was transported to the Kona Community Hospital in critical condition and later died of the injuries that he sustained in the crash. He was later pronounced dead at 8:03 p.m.
The operator of the Subaru station wagon was not injured in the collision and was later released pending further investigation.
Police believe speed was a possible factor in the crash. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.
Autopsies have been ordered in both cases to determine the exact cause of death. The Traffic Enforcement Unit initiated both Coroner’s Inquest investigations and is asking for anyone who may have witnessed either accident to contact Officer Justin Hooser at(808) 326-4646 ext. 229.
The incidents represent the 30th and 31st traffic fatalities this year compared to 32 at this time last year, police say.
