(BIVN) – A plan to develop a veteran’s center across from the University of Hawaiʻi-Hilo was back before the Windward Planning Commission on Wednesday.
Hawaiʻi Island Veterans Memorial, Inc. plans to put a veteran’s center, a community center, and affordable housing on a vacant lot on Kapiʻolani and Kawili Street.
According to the Planning Department, the Hawaiʻi County Council in 2007 approved the rezoning of 4.88-acres of land from an open to a multiple-family residential (RM-1) for the purpose of developing the facilities, including 96 to 110 “independent living apartment units for senior affordable housing with preference to veterans and spouses of veterans.”
Hawaiʻi Island Veterans Memorial, Inc. applied to amend three conditions that were a part of the original rezoning: Condition B (Water Commitment), Condition C (Complete Construction), and Condition F (Install Street Lights and Traffic Controls).
