(BIVN) – Hawai‘i County Civil Defense issued a new message on the flooding in East Hawai‘i. The audio of the message can be heard in the video above, which incorporates footage from a Friday drone flyover of the flooded Hilo Bayfront recorded by Tracey Niimi, as well as some graphics.
The Civil Defense message stated:
This is a Civil Defense update for Saturday, August 25 at 12:00 noon.
The National Weather Service has cancelled the Tropical Storm Warning for Hawaii Island. A High Surf Advisory is still in effect for east facing shores, and a Flash Flood Warning is still in effect for Hawaii Island.
Although the storm has passed by Hawaii Island, rain will continue through the weekend. The Hawaii Police Department reports that due to the heavy rainfall and flash flooding, many roads have sustained damage. Be alert for flowing water on and across the road, debris, water ponding, potholes, and shoulder erosion. Many hazards still exist so please drive carefully. Road closures may still happen without notice.
A temporary traffic light has been installed on Highway 11 near mile marker 30 near the Volcano Golf Course due to a one lane closure.
To report flood damage to your property, please call 808-643-5555.
The latest map of road closures can be found here: http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/2018-hurricane-map
Thank you and please be safe. This is your Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency.
