(BIVN) – Media received an update today on the effort to secure Puna Geothermal Venture as lava erupts nearby.
Tom Travis, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency Administrator and part of a special task force to ensure all hazards are mitigated before the eruption interacts with the industrial facility, spoke to reporters outside the civil defense Emergency Operations Center in Hilo on Monday afternoon.
“Our way forward is to kill and maintain kill on all of the geothermal wells,” Travis said, adding that the plan is to “continue cooling the resource by inserting cold water through one of the injection wells.”
“By next week, we hope to be installing plugs in the bottom of the geothermal wells, so that … the upper part of the well is isolated from the geothermal resource,” Travis added, “and finally toward the end of next week and maybe the week after, we’ll be trying to put plugs in the injection wells, which are the lowest priority and lowest risk wells.”
