UPDATE (9 a.m.) – Hawaii County Civil Defense provided the following update Sunday morning:
Hawaii Fire Department and Department of Land and Natural Resources report Hwy 190 will remain closed between Daniel K. Intersection at the 15.5 MM and Makalei at the 31 MM through this afternoon due to a brush fire that occurred yesterday. Residents between the 18 MM and the 31 MM access is only through the Makalei roadblock. All other traffic use Queen K. Hwy as detour. Thank you for your kokua.
(BIVN) – A brush fire burning in West Hawaii has closed Highway 190 between the Saddle Road intersection and Makalei Fire Station for an undetermined period.
According to emergency officials, the fire department is preparing to do a back burn between the 17 and 18 mile marker on Highway 190 at this time, due to the fire that ignited earlier today.
The County says while Highway 190 is closed, traffic will be detoured to the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway. Local traffic only can access through Makalei side. All other traffic must use Queen K as detour.
