(BIVN) – Recent snowfall has covered the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on Hawaii Island.
Marty Martinson, an employee at the Mauna Loa Observatory, recently made a little snowman to mark the occasion.
The snowfall may have ended, but conditions at the higher elevations of the volcano are no more welcoming. The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Wind Warning, which is in effect until 6 a.m. HST Saturday. North winds are whipping at 30 to 50 mph with localized gusts to 75 mph at higher elevations.
According to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Mauna Loa is closed from Red Hill Cabin to the summit due to the extreme weather conditions.
