(BIVN) – The Hawaii Fire Department has called off its search for the woman swept away in Hilo’s Wailuku River, pending new developments.
A man and a woman were both swept downstream by fast rising waters on January 26th. The man was able to make it to the riverbank but he lost contact with woman. The woman was never found.
News articles confirmed that Chicago-area resident Kelly Mrowinski, on assignment as a travel nurse at Hilo Medical Center, was missing in the incident.
The Hawaii Fire Department Rescue Helicopter conducted aerial surveys on Sunday and today, searching the Wailuku River from Pi’ihonua falls to the ocean, as well as Hilo Bay and near the Hamakua Coast. The effort included many hours of searching through the air, with ground crews and dive teams.
“Our thoughts and prayers goes out to her family during this time,” the fire dispatch stated.
