(BIVN) – The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Wind Advisory for the upper elevations of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, which is in effect until 6 p.m. HST this evening. A High Wind Watch has also been issued. This High Wind Watch is in effect from this evening through Wednesday afternoon.
Forecasters expect to see southwest winds of 40 to 55 mph with gusts from 55 to 65 mph today. Stronger winds exceeding High Wind Warning thresholds are possible tonight and Wednesday, they say.
“Expect increasing wind speeds on the summits of the Big Island this morning,” the National Weather Service statement says. “Strong winds will make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Consider securing loose objects that may become airborne.”
“The road to the summit of Maunakea is closed to the public at the 9,200 foot level due to high winds blowing snow drifts onto the roadways on the summit, ice on the roadways, below freezing temperatures, and due to the latest forecast, which calls for possible fog and ice,” Maunakea Rangers say.
