UPDATE (4:50 p.m.) – The flood advisory is in effect until 5:45 p.m. HST, the National Weather Service reports:
At 3:48 p.m. HST… radar indicated heavy rain has eased a bit over the Big Island. Rainfall cores have shifted away from the Waikoloa and Puuanahulu areas and were mainly over the South Kona and Kau Districts. Rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour may affect the Belt Highway between Honaunau and Hawaii Ocean View Estates. Activity is expected to diminish around sunset.
Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to… Kailua-Kona, Naalehu, Honaunau, Kamuela, Kahaluu-Keauhou, Kealakekua, Kawa Flats, Puako, Pohakuloa Camp, Captain Cook, Puuanahulu and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
(ORIGINAL REPORT) – A Flood Advisory has been issued for Hawaii Island and the National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a special statement warning strong thunderstorms will continue to affect the Big Island through the remainder of the afternoon.
“Dangerous cloud to ground lightning, strong gusty winds of up to 50 mph, and torrential rainfall can be expected with the strongest storms,” forecasters said at 2 p.m. message. “Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Seek safe shelter inside a building or a vehicle.”

At 241 PM HST, radar showed that heavy rain has spread into the Waikoloa and Puuanahulu areas of the island. Additional thunderstorms have developed over the South Kona slopes and over the Ka’u District between the Kilauea volcano and Wood Valley. Areas of heavy rainfall are likely to continue through the afternoon hours.

Sunday’s weather brought thunder and heavy rain to Hawaii Island, as well as a dusting of snow on the summit of Mauna Kea. Most of the snow melted over the course of the day Monday.
