KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – A strong thunderstorm is impacting parts of West Hawaii.
At 1:29 p.m. HST, the National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a Special Weather Statement, reporting a strong thunderstorm was located 12 miles east of Kealakekua, or 17 miles east of Kailua-Kona. The storm is nearly stationary.
Winds in excess of 30 mph and pea size hail are possible with this storm, forecasters say. Locations impacted include Pohakuloa Training Area and Honaunau.
“Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm,” the National Weather Service says. “Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.”
The storm is the result of an upper-level disturbance passing over the islands today, allowing some of the trade wind showers to become briefly heavy.
