HILO, Hawaii – The Pahala Ballfield is being named after a beloved Ka’u principal.
Bill 252 recognizing the late Laurence J. Capellas by renaming the ballfield “Laurence J. Capellas Ballfield,” and adding it to the Parks and Recreation facility schedule, passed first reading at the Hawaii County Council. It was introduced by councilwoman Maile David.

Along with Capellas Ballfield, the new Ka’u gym & shelter will be named after State Rep. Robert Herkes, and the Shipman Park soccer fields will be named to honor coach Justin Masayoshi “Buddy” Perry.
All three bills passed on first reading and will have one more council approval to go before adoption. Then its off to the mayor for his signature.
