HILO, Hawaii – It was a long day at the Thirty Meter Telescope contested case hearing in Hilo Thursday.
The extended hearing was an attempt to accommodate University of Hawaii witness and director of the Institue for Astronomy Gunther Hasinger, who will be leaving the island on a trip next week.
Hasinger’s testimony and lengthy cross-examination by opponents of the TMT project continued well beyond the normal 4 p.m. wrap-up time.
Na Leo TV broadcast the hearing up until the very end, when participant Cindy Freitas finished up her questioning. By that time the Crown Room of the Naniloa Hotel had a lot more empty chairs than it did earlier in the day.
Surrounded by tired participants, petitioner Pua Case stated her objection to the overtime session, for the record.
Hearing officer Riki May Amano said she hopes next week’s proceedings will pick up the pace.
