HILO, Hawaii – Keahi Warfield of PUEO and Keaukaha One Youth Development spoke in support of the UH-Hilo Hoku Kea telescope during the Mauna Kea Management Board meeting on Tuesday.
While addressing the board, Warfield shared his own 10-point vision for education opportunities on the mountain. His plan differs from the 10-point plan dictated to the university by Governor David Ige in May 2015, at the height of the tensions over the Thirty Meter Telescope.
The Hoku Kea – at the time inoperable – was identified as one of the telescopes to be removed from the mountain in order to meet Ige’s request to decommission as many telescopes as possible, with at least 25 percent of all telescopes gone by the time TMT is ready for operation.
