POHOIKI, Hawaii – A second steam release is being reported at Puna Geothermal Venture this morning.
At 2:30 a.m. today (Monday Oct. 3), PGV reported a release of steam at their plant, Hawaii County Civil Defense reported.
PGV also reported that the situation has been contained and secured.

“Based on all available data, there is no threat to the public and no evacuation is necessary,” stated the civil defense alert that was circulated at 4:14 a.m. “Fire Department is on scene and Civil Defense will continue to monitor.”
This is the second steam release reported in less than one week at PGV. The first occurred at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 30.
UPDATE (7:02 a.m.) – Geothermal watchdog group Puna Pono Alliance said on Facebook that the “explosion… was heard from further away than normal, unknown gas release, no reports of anyone smelling gas.”
