HAWAII ISLAND – A Flood Advisory has been issued for North / South Kona and Ka’u on Hawaii Island, and is in effect until 5:30 p.m.
The National Weather Service says the locations in the advisory include but are not limited to the leeward Big
Island from Honaunau to Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.
At 3:40 p.m. HST, radar indicated heavy showers and thunderstorms over the lower leeward slopes of the Big Island, mainly from Honaunau to Ocean View Estates. Rainfall rates as high as 2 inches per hour will likely lead to nuisance flooding along Mamalahoa Highway.
Weather forecasters warn those in the effected area to “stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.”
“Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action,” forecasters say.
