HONOKA‘A, Hawaii – Four Hawaii Island hālau will take the stage at the Honoka‘a Peoples Theatre today (Saturday, May 7) for the 4th Annual Hāmākua Youth Foundation Hula Festival.
The event, which serves as a fundraiser for Hāmākua Youth Center, begins at 4 p.m. and will feature performances by the Beamer Solomon Hālau O Po‘ohala (Kumu Hula Hulali Solomon Covingto), Hālau O Aloha (Kumu Hula Aloha Dela Rosa), Hālau Na Lei Punahele (Kumu Hula Punahele Andrade) and Hula Me Ka Honua led by Lanakila Mangauil. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. and the evening will open with a chant by children from the Hāmākua Youth Center.
“With a wide variety of styles, tradition and hula lineage,” organizers wrote in a media release, “these four troupes will showcase an exciting and diverse collection of hula, mele and oli, highlighted by authentic and colorful costumes, lei, and musical implements.”
Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for students. Keiki 12 and under are free. All proceeds will benefit the programs at the Hāmākua Youth Center, the primary program of Hāmākua Youth Foundation, a community grassroots organization dedicated to creating nurturing and stimulating youth-centered programs for youth.
