KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – Lands in Kailua-Kona scorched by brush fire last week continue to smoke and smolder, and a video taken by a Hawaii County firefighter helps explain why.
On March 2, fire crews fought back the 25 acre-blaze that threatened neighborhoods in Kamani Trees, Komohana Kai, and Kilohana, saving homes from destruction. The fire reignited the next day and has continued to smoke ever since, keeping residents in a constant state of unrest.
Hawaii County firefighter Joe Crable captured video that provides an insight into why the Lako Street fire keeps throwing off smoke. Crable took a video of the ground as it bubbled and boiled, and when he put his axe to it, it explodes into smoke. Crable said the roots of the kiawe trees are burning, underground.
Sherry Bracken obtained Crable’s video, seen above, and contributed to this report.
