SOUTH KOHALA – The Hawaii Police Department reports that Route 190 and the Daniel K. Inouye Highway (New Saddle Road) is now fully open, following a closure that began yesterday afternoon due to several brush fires being actively fought in the area.
Also, as a safety precaution, the Public Affairs Office of the U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii reports Army officials are closing hunting at Pohakuloa Training Area this weekend (Feb. 13-15) due to the brushfire.
Police say military personnel assisted Hawaii County Fire Department in the firefighting effort.
Officials say the fires appear suspicious, having started five different locations. Over 1,000 acres have burned in North Kona and South Kohala.
