KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – Kohanaiki Beach Park, also known as Pine Trees in Kailua-Kona, is closed.
According to the Hawaii County Civil Defense, the State Department of Land and Natural Resources and U.S. Coast Guard report that a small boat had run aground yesterday in the area of the popular West Hawaii beach.
“Due to hazardous conditions with debris and leaking fuel,” civil defense stated in an audio message, “the immediate area of the beach has been closed and swimmers and surfers are advised to remain out of the water and avoid the area.”
It is unknown at this time when the beach will be reopened, the county reported. “Authorities are working to remove the vessel and contain any fuel spill,” civil defense said. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
