HILO, Hawaii – High Surf is impacting Hilo Saturday morning. A large north-northeast swell is bringing elevated surf to north and east facing shores of the Big Island and rough waters are expected to continue through Sunday.
At 6:19 a.m., Hawaii County Police announced the closure of Bayfront Highway between Waianuenue and Pauahi Streets due to high surf.
At 8:45 a.m. Hawaii County Civil Defense issued an alert.
“The National Weather Service High Surf Advisory for the North and East facing Shores of Hawaii Island remains in effect. Surf heights of 15 to 20 feet along the north facing shores and heights of 7 to 10 feet along the east facing shores can be expected. Peak surf conditions may coincide with the high tides. The high surf advisory is expected to continue through 6:00 PM tomorrow. Beachgoer, swimmers and surfers are advised to exercise caution and to heed all advice given by Ocean Safety Officials.”Hawaii County Civil Defense on Oct. 3
Civil Defense says that due to the hazardous conditions the following beach parks in Hilo are closed at this time until further notice:
- Onekahakaha Beach Park
- Kealoha Beach Park
The county says park and ocean safety personnel will be monitoring conditions and may reopen the parks when it is safe to do so.
