HAWAII ISLAND – The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for Hawaii Island through 7 p.m. this afternoon. “Due to unstable and moist air conditions heavy rain and thunder showers can be expected for parts of the island,” reports Hawaii County Civil Defense. “Motorists are advised to drive with caution and to be prepared for hazardous conditions to include ponding and run off and to anticipate traffic delays.”
Police are reporting heavy rain in the upper Waikoloa area causing hazardous driving conditions on Waikoloa Road from the 5 mile marker up to the intersection with Highway 190, and also on Highway 190 from Pu’uanahulu to Waimea. “Both roadways remain open,” police say, “however extreme caution AND DECREASED SPEED should be exercised if travel in these areas is necessary.”
In a special weather statement, the National Weather Service reported “Isolated thunderstorms on the Big Island are producing bursts of lightning. Additional thunderstorms will continue to flare along Big Island slopes mainly in the Honokaa and Waimea areas through the afternoon.”

HIGH SURF WARNING CONTINUES
“The High Surf Warning for the east facing shores of Hawaii Island remains in effect,” reports Hawaii County Civil Defense, “and has been extended through 6 p.m. tomorrow. Dangerous surf conditions continue to be observed and reported across areas of East Hawaii. Surf heights of 12-18 feet are forecast for the east facing shores of Hawaii Island. Residents along the coast and in low lying areas are advised to take necessary precautions. Beachgoers swimmers and surfers are advised to exercise caution and to heed all advice given by Ocean Safety Officials.”
Due to debris and ongoing dangerous surf conditions, civil defense reports the following beach parks and facilities in East Hawaii will remain closed:
- Onekahakaha Beach Park
- Leleiwi Beach Park
- Kealoha Beach Park
- Richardsons Beach Park
- Ahalanui Beach Park
- Laupahoehoe Boat ramp
