HAWAII – Hilda has diminished into a Tropical Depression as it tracks off to the southwest, more than 190 miles south of the Big Island’s South Point. The National Weather Service says the predicted strong west southwesterly wind shear has left Hilda looking ragged on satellite and the system will continue to weaken into a remnant low in 48 hours.
Hilda still carries a lot of moisture in its wake. A Flash Flood watch is being maintained and will remain in effect through 6 a.m. Saturday morning. Heavy rains and thunder showers are expected.
According to the National Weather Service in an 11 a.m. statement for East Hawaii:
“A wet day will continue with showers… Heavy at times… Continuing over the Hilo and Puna districts into the early afternoon. Rainfall rates may briefly exceed an inch per hour in some of the heavier downpours as they come through. Showers will be less frequent over the North Kohala and Hamakua districts.”
Over Big Island interior and summit areas, NWS says:
“A few thundershowers are likely to develop by mid-afternoon… And some of these could contain heavy downpours andgusty winds… As well as cloud-to-ground lightning strikes.”
According to Hawaii County Civil Defense:
“Heavy rains and thunder showers are expected across the east and southeast area of Hawaii Island and to begin this afternoon and through tonight. Residents in flood prone areas are advised to take necessary precautions and motorists are advised to drive carefully and prepare for possible hazardous conditions and traffic delays. Currently all roads and schools are open. Some schools may be modifying or suspending afterschool activities based on anticipated weather conditions and possible road closures. Parents are advised to contact your respective schools for current information on afterschool programs.”
