- KOHALA – A runaway brushfire burned over 4,500 acres in South Kohala over the weekend, forcing evacuations and closing major highways.
According to the most recent Civil Defense report, issued early Sunday evening:
“The Hawaii Fire Department reports that the brush fires in the Kawaihae area continue to burn however conditions have improved and allow for the opening of all roadways and access to the Kawaihae Village area. residents of the Kawaihae Village area are allowed to return home and advised to expect smoky conditions. All roads are open and motorists are advised to drive with caution as fire crews continue to work in the area. The evacuation center at the Waimea Community Center will be closed as of 4:30PM.”
