- HILO – As Tropical Storm Guillermo draws closer to Hawaii, the Big Island is reminded of the events that took place nearly one year ago to the day, when Tropical Storm Iselle hammered East Hawaii on August 7th, 2014. Iselle was a hurricane up until it made landfall, and so Puna faced the worst of it. High winds toppled trees and storm surge inundated coastal villages like Kapoho. We spoke to Hawaii County Civil Defense administrator Darryl Oliveira about what has been learned, and how it is being applied now that Guillermo threatens the islands one year later. (Note: this video was filmed Sunday afternoon when there seemed to be a higher possibility of tropical storm conditions affecting Hawaii Island. The threat seems to have diminished since then, although the island is still on a Tropical Storm Watch as of Tuesday morning.)
