HILO, HAWAII – The state Department of Transportation issued a media release on Tuesday, advising Hilo and Keaukaha residents of “an expected increase in aircraft traffic over the area” due to airfield maintenance work at the Hilo International Airport.
Runway 8-26 will be closed for airfield maintenance and lighting work on Wednesday night, May 20, through Friday morning, May 22, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., nightly. During this time, flight patterns will be modified to use Runway 3-21, resulting in increased air traffic over Hilo Town and the Keaukaha community. Work is weather permitting.
In addition, Runway 8-26 will be closed on June 14, through July 17, Monday through Friday, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., nightly. Construction will repave the middle section of the runway to provide a smooth surface for airplane arrival and departures.
