NANAWALE ESTATES, Hawaii – One of the worst hit Puna subdivisions during this weekend’s high wind event was Nanawale Estates. Residents seem to be getting used to severe weather toppling giant albizia trees around the neighborhood. Some residents said they felt like this storm was worse than Hurricane Iselle in August 2014 because the high winds went on for so much longer.
“Due to extensive damage to the utility system in the Puna area,” Civil Defense stated in a message this morning, “some area residents are advised to prepare for the possibility of extended outages through this week. The public is reminded to treat all downed power lines as energized and to report power outages and downed lines to HELCO at 969-6666.”
