NORTH HAWAII: This weekend’s high winds did a number on North Hawaii. Downed trees shut roads, damaged homes, and brought down power lines across North Kohala.
Highway 19 in Waimea between the 55 and 56 mile marks was closed to all traffic due to a downed tree. Traffic was being re-routed through Mana Road and Kamamalu Road.
A large tree fell on a home on Kalake Street off Mamalahoa Highway, simultaneously damaging a few cars in the driveway (video above). A neighbor said the tree came down about 1 p.m. No one was inside the home at the time.
According to the Hawaii Electric Light Company, customers in Hawi and Waimea were among the 5,000 without power as of 5:30 p.m. Most outages were reported in Puna.
In Kapa’au, severe winds damaged parts of Kamehameha Park. Sporting events had to be cancelled. A KITV viewer recorded the roof being a blown off the grandstand.
