- 21-year-old Atkinson Nakashima of Hilo was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder, for allegedly striking a victim in the neck with a machete early Saturday morning on West Kawaili Street in Hilo.

Hawaiʻi County police have arrested and charged a Hilo man with attempted murder in connection with an altercation in Hilo early Saturday morning (October 18).
At 2 a.m. Saturday, police responded to the 400 block of West Kawili Street and found a 21-year-old Hilo man with a neck injury. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.
Investigation revealed that the victim had attempted to break up a fight between a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy when the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Atkinson Nakashima of Hilo, struck the victim in the neck with a machete. Nakashima was arrested at the scene and taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.
At 4 p.m. Sunday (October 19), detectives charged him with attempted second-degree murder. His bail was set at $50,000. He remains at the cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday afternoon (October 20).Hawaii County Police on Oct. 19, 2014
