NEWS BRIEFS
- Hurricane Ana is about 155 miles west southwest of Kailua-Kona and moving northwest at 13 miles per hour. Maximum sustained winds are measured at 80 miles per hour.
- The National Weather Service Tropical Storm Watch for Hawaii Island was apparently cancelled at 2 a.m. HST on Saturday morning, although a 7:45 a.m. HST message from Hawaii County Civil Defense said the Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect. Hawaii Island is also under a Flash Flood Warning until 10 a.m. HST this morning. The Flash Flood Warning focuses on Ka’u, especially Wood Valley, Pahala, and Punaluu.
- Kawa Flats is flooded. The Hawaii Police Department reports that Highway 11 between the 57 and 58 mile marks between Pahala and Naalehu is closed to all traffic due to flooding. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to use alternate routes if possible.
- Large swells from Hurricane Ana are impacting the south and west facing shores of the Big Island. Civil Defense says all shoreline residents are advised to take precautions and to prepare for high surf and storm surge run up.
- Rain and thunderstorms continue in Hilo. Forecasts continue to call for heavy rains and thunder showers across the areas of Puna, Kau, and Kona today.

Presently the system is showing maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour with higher gusts. In addition to the high winds, high surf and storm surge may be continuing as well as heavy rains and thunder showers. All shoreline residents are advised to take precautions and to prepare for high surf and storm surge run up.
Present forecasts continue to call for heavy rains and thunder showers across the areas of Puna, Kau, and Kona and Hawaii Island will remain under a flood warning through 10:00am today.
