KAPOHO, Hawaii – It appears the easternmost tip of East Hawaii bore the brunt of Hurricane Iselle. For most of the subdivisions in Puna, the damage came from the wind that toppled trees onto power lines and across roadways. But in Kapaoho’s Vacationland, devastation came in the form of a tidal surge.
In this video, Big Island Video News takes a tour of the wreckage throughout the small community which sits along Kapoho’s famous Wai Opae tide pools. Residents told us some homes were knocked off their foundation, and at least one was washed down the road.
While we were filming, the National Guard canvassed the streets, assessing the damage.
