WAIMEA, Hawaii – Four important races likely yo be decided in the August 9 Primary Election were featured at a Thursday evening forum in Waimea. The races included State Senate District 4 (Lorraine Inouye and Sen. Malama Solomon), State House District 7 (Rep. Cindy Evans, running unopposed), County Council Dist. 1 (Larry Gering and Councilmember Val Poindexter) and Dist. 9 (Ronald Gonzales, Oliver “Sonny” Shimaoka and Councilmember Margaret Wille).
The forum began with introductions and a quick question about priorities, and then shifted to a “speed dating” format with candidates moving from group to group around the room for an up close and personal talk to discuss attendees priorities. Sherry Bracken with Hawai’i Public Radio and Mahalo Broadcasting served as moderator.
Forum co-sponsors included WCA, Lalamilo Farmers, Friends of the Future, Tutu’s House, Mala’ai: The Culinary Garden of Waimea Middle School, North Hawai’i Rotary, Parker School , Waimea Town Market, Waimea Preservation Association, Coqui Free Waimea, Habitat for Humanity – West Hawai’i and Waimea Middle School.
