KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – The 19th annual Keiki Surf for the Earth and Beach Cleanup at Kohanaiki was held on Saturday.
Organizers say over 100 kids participated in the 14 and under surf contest.
The folks at Body Glove say the focus is to involve the community in activities that protect the environment as well as perpetuate cultural practices and values. The hope is that the youth will become the future stewards of the island’s land and water resources.
The event was also a chance to celebrate the preservation of this Shoreline as a public beach park. Kohanaiki was officially dedicated to the county last year, after a long legal battle to save it from development.
