MAKALEI, Hawaii – The Hawaii Fire Department reports that the brush fire along the makai side of Highway 190 (Mamalahoa Highway) in the area of the 29 mile mark has been extinguished and all operations completed. The highway is open to all traffic at this time, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense.
In what was originally described as a runaway brushfire, early alerts placed the blaze on Bishop Estate lands, about two miles north of the Makalei golf course. Officials said no homes were in danger.
The fire department says the cause of the fire is unknown. The firefighters described the scene in this dispatch:
On Co.21’s arrival, we found an actively burning brushfire approximately 3000 sq.ft. in size, steadily heading North. Co.21 aggressively pursued the head of the fire, and with Co.7’s assistance we were able to eventually surround the fire and get the fire under control.
