WAIMEA, Hawaii – A hui of students, teachers and community came together on Thursday to celebrate the unveiling of Waimea’s Mele Mural.
The large work of art representing the mele and mo’olelo of Waimea adorns three walls on the Kahilu Theater. Students who helped shape the artwork were overcome with emotion as they explained the meanings behind the imagery.
The Mele Mural project is the brainchild of The Estria Foundation, a non profit that creates art in public spaces locally and globally with artists, youth, educators, and activists in order to raise awareness and inspire action in the movement to resolve human and environmental issues.
