HILO, Hawaii – A reported accident on Mailekea Road sent a man to the hospital in critical condition and left his tractor overturned in a river bed just before noon on Wednesday.
UPDATE (5:53 p.m.): Hawaii County Police say the vicitim in this crash, identified as 25-year-old Jose Luiz Hernandez-Miranda of Keaʻau, has died.
Police say Hernandez-Miranda was operating the tractor when it fell off a cliff and into a stream.
A media release was issued Thursday evening.
(Responding police) learned that Hernandez-Miranda had been operating a Ford tractor on a farm when he got too close to the edge of a 12-foot cliff above a stream and fell into the stream with the tractor.
Fire/rescue personnel extricated him from the water and took him to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:38 p.m.
Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Because the accident happened on private property, the death is not included in the Police Department’s official fatality count.Hawaii County Police Dept. – Feb. 19, 2014

Noted companies responded to a report of a tractor accident at the noted location. Upon arrival found a 20 to 30’s year old male pulseless, apneic, and unresponsive located in a river bed next to an overturned tractor. Pt extricated from the river bed by Chopper One and transported to Hilo Medical Center by Medic One in critical condition. Scene turned over to HPD for investigation.Hawaii Co. Fire dispatch
