ORIGINAL STORY: The Hawaii County Civil Defense says highway 190 remains closed in area of the 14 mile marker, due to the brush fire that has been burning since Monday. Authorities say traffic detours are in place.
The fire has burned over 300 acres. The fire is on the south or Kona side, of the Highway 190 junction with Saddle Road, and is on the east – or mauka – side of the highway.
No homes or property are threatened at this time.
Heavy smoke and active burning along the road has forced the closure of highway 190. Traffic is being diverted into the old Saddle Road, Waikoloa Village Road, and Kaiminani Drive in Kona.
