KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – Belgium’s Frederick Van Lierde won the 35th GoPro IRONMAN World Championship in Kona on Saturday, crossing the finish line on Ali’i Drive after 8 hours, 12 minutes and 29 seconds of grueling triathlon on the Big Island of Hawaii.
The victory ends a six year stretch of Australian dominance. Aussie Luke McKenzie tried to prevent his country’s championship streak from ending. He took the lead shortly after the start of the third leg of the event – the 26.2 mile run – and held it until mile 17, or just after the NELHA Energy Lab. That’s when Van Lierde took over. McKenzie kept up, and finished three minutes after the Belgian champion.
Mirinda Carfrae earned her second women’s world championship title, setting a 2:50 run course record. Rachel Joyce finished second.
