WAINAKU, Hawaii – Police and fire officials are reporting a fatal fire that happened in the Wainaku section of Hilo early Thursday morning.
Two bodies were discovered in the Wainaku Street home after the blaze reduced the structure to rubble.
The fire was reported at 1:08 a.m. Responding patrol officers and firefighters found the house fully engulfed in flames.
According to a fire dispatch, the fire was at 917 Wainaku Street. Firefighters described the scene they saw when they first arrived:
HPD on scene of a single family dwelling fully involved in fire with the roof partially collapsed. Fire extinguished and salvage and overhaul operations conducted. Per HPD, possible occupants in the residence. HFD personnel found two fatalities within the structure. Scene turned over to Fire Investigator and HPD for investigation. |
Police say the identities of the victims and the cause of the fire are still under investigation.
Autopsies have been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
