HILO, Hawaii – A line stretched down the mall of Prince Kuhio Plaza for the 10:30 a.m. opening of Hawaii Island’s first Zippy’s Restaurant on Thursday.
Hundreds stormed the eatery on two fronts: the Fast Food Counter & Napoleon’s Bakery, which opens out onto the mall traffic, and the Dine-In Restaurant, which has its own entrance to the Kuhio Plaza parking lot.
Zippy’s is well known through-out the state for its signature chili (over 110 tons sold a month, the company says) and its assortment of local plates. There are 23 locations on Oahu and one on Maui. From the company’s website:
Francis and Charles Higa founded Zippy’s Restaurants on October 17, 1966. With their perseverance and vision, what started out as one restaurant on King Street has grown to locations all over Oahu, and on the island of Maui. Zippy’s Restaurants has also grown to include other operations such as Napoleon’s Bakery, Osaka Okazuya, Kahala Sushi at Zippy’s Kahala, and the Sushi Bar at Zippy’s Pearl City. |
In the above video, we spoke to FCH Enterprises, Inc. president Paul S. Yokota
