KEAUHOU, Hawaii – A “challenging fire” at a Keauhou Surf & Racquet Club condo was put out by Hawaii County firefighters early Friday morning.
The 1:11 a.m. alarm sounded after heavy smoke was seen coming out of the eaves of the condo. The fire was located in the attic space.
The blaze was a challenge “due to the location in the attic”, read the fire department’s dispatch. “Older building with new metal roof placed on wood shingles with perlings and cedar planks. There was a lot of combustible material beneath the metal roofing. The metal roofing was pulled off and the fire extinguished.” The fire was out by 3:41 a.m.
The fire department reports residents were evacuated, but no one was injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The blaze is estimated to have caused $90,000 in damage.
