MAUNA KEA, Hawaii: High winds whipped the summit of Mauna Kea for a second straight day.
The Mauna Kea access road was once again forced to close. The message from the Mauna Kea Rangers, recorded on Wednesday morning (see video above), blamed strong winds for the need to shut down.
The National Weather Service continued the High wind Warning until midnight. According to the Mauna KEa visitors center website, some gusts in excess of 70 miles per hour were measured.
As of Thursday morning, the road was open. The most recent wind gust measurement was at 31 mph, with the highest gust in the last 24 hours measured at 66 miles per hour the night before.
