Media release by Hawaii County Police
On February 16 at approximately 8:18 a.m., South Kohala patrol officers responded to the Foodland Stores market in Kamuela on a report of a grenade that was found to be within the produce section of the store. The store was subsequently closed and evacuated for safety reasons.
With the assistance of TSA officials, it was determined that the grenade was an inert training device that was shipped with the produce from Seattle, Washington, and did not pose an immediate threat to the safety of the public. TSA officials assisted with the removal and disposal of the device and will be conducting an independent investigation surrounding the circumstances of the shipping of the training device.
The store was reopened at 11:40 a.m.
Hawaiʻi Police Department continued its investigation into this incident as a terroristic threatening case.
