KAWAIHAE, Hawaii: Nā Kālai Waʻa hosted their second annual Mālama Makaliʻi Ocean Festival in Kawaihae this past weekend.
Organizers say Mālama Makaliʻi Ocean Festival is a day dedicated to celebrating the gifts of Kanaloa. The gathering was also a chance to increase awareness of mālama kai concepts and responsible stewardship: like caring for our oceans.
There was music and entertianment, cultural demonstrations and hands in workshops.
One of the highlites of the festival: Every year the life of wa’a kaulua MAKALI’I … Hawaii Island’s voyaging canoe … is celebrated. The vessel welcomes the community aboard.
