HONOLULU, Hawaii: Over $92.8 million for various Capital Improvement Projects were released by Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie on Friday, all designed to maintain, upgrade and expand transportation infrastructure across the state.
“Our highways, airports and harbors are essential to island commerce and our way of life; everyone depends on the daily reliability and functionality of this core infrastructure,” said Governor Abercrombie in a media release. “By investing in these needed maintenance and improvement projects now, we will create local jobs and further stimulate the economy, while ensuring the continued flow of ground, air and ship transportation to, from and throughout the state.”
As far as highways go on the Big Island, the Keaau-Pahoa Road will get a large chunk – nearly $4 million. Also, Hilo Bayfront Highway and parts of Mamalahoa Highway will be awarded with smaller funding amounts.
In airports, Hilo International gets the state’s largest single fund release: $14 million for the construction of a new cargo facility building. Kona International Airport will also be funded a total of $10,804,185 for four seperate projects.
The Big Island also gets the lions share in harbor money. $8 and a half million is headed for the Pier 2 Terminal at Kawaihae Harbor, and another $2 million for dredgeing at Hilo Harbor.
The full list is below.
Including these funds, the state says Governor Abercrombie so far in 2012 has approved more than $423.8 million for CIPs, selected for their potential to immediately stimulate the economy and generate job opportunities for residents.
