VOLCANO, Hawaii: Kimberly Dark returns to host the Summer Slam at Volcano Art Center, a hotbed for local poetry slam activity on Hawaii Island.
“We are thrilled to have Kimberly back one more time. She is an incredible story-teller, poet and performer and she really gets our audience pumped up. Her energy is electric! This may be the last poetry slam Kimberly hosts for a while, and we’re already buzzing over what she may be brewing up for the future.” – David Wallerstein, VAC’s Concerts and Performances Coordinator.
What would you do with three minutes and a microphone? Volcano Art Center invites you to discover the answer for yourself at the Poetry Summer Slam hosted by Kimberly Dark on Friday, June 8.
The last in a series of outrageously popular open mic nights, VAC’s Summer Slam offers a friendly, engaging and often hilarious competition for anyone willing to fearlessly reveal themselves through original spoken word. Audience favorite Kimberly Dark returns as Slam Emcee to host what will undoubtedly become one of VAC’s most unforgettable events.
“We are thrilled to have Kimberly back one more time,” stated David Wallerstein, VAC’s Concerts and Performances Coordinator. “She is an incredible story-teller, poet and performer and she really gets our audience pumped up. Her energy is electric! This may be the last poetry slam Kimberly hosts for a while, and we’re already buzzing over what she may be brewing up for the future.”
The Poetry Summer Slam performances will be scored by five judges based on the content of their slam, the manner of delivery and the passion behind their words. Because the slam genre merges the spoken word with dramatic presentation, participants are encouraged to be as expressive as possible with their poetry and performances. Prizes will be awarded to the three highest rated poets.
Rules for participation: (1) only original works may be shared and must be performed without the aid of props, costumes, or musical accompaniment; (2) poems may be memorized or read; (3) be prepared to present two poems but be aware that not everyone will advance to the second round; (4) poems must be no longer than three minutes.
The Volcano Art Center Poetry Summer Slam will begin at 7:00pm at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road, VAC’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Slam sign-up begins in person at 6:00pm. Tickets are $5.00 and available for advanced purchase at the Niaulani Campus or online at www.volcanoartcenter.org.
