HILO, Hawaii: The 7th annual Hilo Inter-Tribal PowWow culminated three days of native culture at Wailoa River State Park on Monday.
Master of Ceremonies John Dawson guided the audience through the many dances and demonstrations, like this hoop dance, performed to the rythm of the 808 NDN the co-host drum of the powwow along with Wild Horse.
This year’s headman dancer was Catcher Cuts the Rope, and the Headwoman Dancer was Loa Miles Simoes. Of course the event was attended by many of the PowWow’s familiar faces, like Wiamea resident Mike Allen, always adorned in this traditional grass dance outfit he crafted himself.
The PowWow is held every Memorial Day weekend in the town of Hilo. Organizers say it’s three days of non-competitive sharing and cultural fun. This year the event was sponsored by the Federation of American natives and Connections Public charter School.
